hamlet and lear Essay Hamlet and Lear EssayShakespeare has many overlapping themes that seem to correlate throughout his different works of literature. However, there are many themes that conflict as well. King Lear and Hamlet are two works of literature that can be both compared and contrasted. Hamlet and Lear seem to be complete opposites on the surface. Hamlet is a young prince who is lost in a world of confusion and deception. His father is brutally murdered by his uncle and he then must face him as his new father-in-law when he marries his mother. Lear is an elderly man who is past his prime and is trying to raise his daughters in a world of vanity and live with the Renaissances preoccupation with appearances. As conflicting as these two characters seem they also have to deal with many of the same pressures and they surprisingly handle certain situations similarly. One such circumstance is that they are both forced the verge of madness. But this isnt the only thing that is coincidental between the two characters situation. They both have methods to their madness. Hamlet goes through many trials and tribulations throughout this play. He must live though his fathers untimely death, his uncles hasty marry to his mother, Ophelias refusal to see him or except his love letters, and the conspiracies that he sees planned against him. This alone is enough for any reader to understand why he has gone mad and to sympathize with. But Hamlet is stronger than he lets on to anybody. He is only pretending to be as mad as he is so that people will not become suspicious when he snoops around the house and acts irrationally toward his mother and step-father. His madness becomes the obsession of the house and King Claudius actually brings his old friends, Rosencranz and Guildenstern, to the house to find out what is causing him to loose his sanity. He asks them, Something have you heard/of Hamlets transformation? Everybody ends up with his or her own personal explanation to why Hamlet has gone mad. Queen Gertrude feels that it is simply his fathers death and her marriage that has caused him to cross the line between sanity and insanity. Polonius believes that it was his refusal to let Hamlet see his daughter, Ophelia, that has made him mad. Ophelia can not find a reason for his madness, and feels it is the pressure of society and his new family that has changed him so dramatically. Whatever the reason, most of Hamlets friends and family were set on the fact that Hamlet was no longer in his right mind. However, Hamlet used this tactic of pretending to be out of his wits to fool his enemies into underestimating his plans of revenge until the moment of attack, and then, of course, it would be too late. King Lear also was accused of going mad. He divided his kingdom into three parts so that each one of his daughters could share in his wealth. He had each daughter battle against each other to see who could flatter him the most. Goneril and Reagan both fought ruthlessly to attain the better division of land. When his youngest daughter (who was also his favorite) told him that she loved him like a daughter should love a father and that one day she would have a husband that she would also love, he became frenetic. He disowned her from the family, leaving the property to his other two daughters. Lear is shunned by his two daughters later on in the play, and is kicked out onto the streets where he becomes delirious. Although this display of daft behavior is more genuine than Hamlets, I believe that Lear ranted and raved because he was used to getting attention. Social status was very crucial in the renaissance era. Many people would judge a person by how many followers and possessions the y held. Now that Lear was on his own and not surrounded by his followers he felt that he was worth nothing if he had nothing. For the first time in his life, he had to face his true self worth. To Kill a Mockingbird free essay sample

A mockingbird is a bird that does no harm to humans, its only purpose is singing. It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because it has no negative impact on humans; therefore there is no reason in killing it. This was an important lesson taught by Atticus to his children, Jem and Scout, that allowed their morality to grow from children with wild imaginations to people with different views and respects on society. In the book, Atticus and Miss Maudie act as mockingbirds to Jem and Scout. Although, Jem and Scout show immaturity at the beginning of the novel by not respecting elders and not following their fathers lessons, the adult guidance of Atticus and Miss Maudie leads them to realize the importance of showing courage and respecting others. Courage is an important part of human kindness, especially when defending and supporting people in your own community. In Maycomb, Atticus is a well-known lawyer, and shows courage when he defends an innocent African American man, Tom Robinson. Even though Scout stuck up for Walter and explained to Miss. Caroline that he is too poor to afford a lunch and shoes. Miss Caroline said, â€Å"You’re starting off on the wrong foot in every way, my dear. Hold out your hand† (Lee28). Miss. Caroline got Scout in trouble for speaking up and hit her with a ruler for punishment. Scout blamed Walter for her getting in trouble so decided to beat him up during recess. When Atticus Finch got her in trouble for what she did, she soon realized that wasn’t the right thing to do. Another way maturity is shown in this novel is when Robert Ewell was angry about the way Atticus made him look on the stands, so on his way to the post office Bob Ewell spat in Atticus’ face. Bob told Atticus he would get him if it took him the rest of his life. When a man says he’s gonna get you, looks like he means it† (292). Bob was mad about the trial and that Atticus destroyed his last shred of credibility. The final way maturity is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird is when Jem Finch cut the tops off of Mrs. Dubose’s camellia bushes. Mrs. Dubose was the first adult to say that Atticus was no better than a black man because he is Tom Robinsons Lawyer. Mrs. Dubose says, â€Å"Jeremy Finch, I told you you’d live to regret tearing up my camellias. You regret it now, don’t you? † (146). Atticus punished Jem by making him go apologize to Mrs. Dubose. When he did she told him he had to read to her two hours a day for a month. Maturity was a huge part in moving on in life during these tough times. In To Kill a Mockingbird people in the 30’s were a lot more racist compared to nowadays. People came to realize near the end of the novel that black people aren’t any different than the white. The first way racism appears is when Aunt Alexandra wanted Calpurnia to leave because she was black and she didn’t think she was needed anymore now that she was there. Atticus stands up for Calpurnia and says, â€Å"Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (182). Calpurnia had to teach her kids how to read and write because education is segregated and there is no school for black people in Maycomb. Another way racism appears is when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, but really he was an innocent man. People assumed that just because Tom was a black man that he was guilty. Mayella Ewell says, â€Å"I don’t know how he done it, but he done it- I said it all happened so fast I -† (Harper249). Cecil Jacobs declared that Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers. Francis, Alexandra’s grandson tells Scout that Atticus is a nigger-lover. During the trial the African Americans had to sit separately from the whites, and it was an all-white jury. The have a large amount of evidence in favour of Tom Robinson proving that he is innocent, but they do not go through the evidence with an open mind due to the fact that he is black. The last way racism appears is how Dolphus Raymond is not accepted to either the blacks or whites communities because he has half-black, half-white children. He drinks from a bottle covered by a paper bag to give the impression to fellow white southerners that he is a drunk, a morally weak man who is too afraid to stand up for his beliefs. However, as Dill discovers when he takes a sip, Dolphus actually drinks Coca-Cola from the bag. Jem says, â€Å"How c’n you stand to get drunk ‘fore eight in the morning? † (211). His purpose for appearing to be a drunk is to excuse himself in the eyes of his white peers for being married to a black woman and fathering racially mixed children. Racism was a large part in the lives of the families in Maycomb. Loyalty was an important theme during and after the trial in this novel. The first way loyalty is displayed is how Atticus sticks by Tom Robinson’s side through the trial. A lot of people in Maycomb have grown to be much better people and show maturity, racism, and loyalty in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Born in Dunfermline, Scotland, on November 25, 1835, Andrew Carnegie entered the world in poverty. The son of a hand weaver, Carnegie received his only formal education during the short time between his birth and his move to the United States. When steam machinery for weaving came into use, Carnegie's father sold his looms and household goods, sailing to America with his wife and two sons. At this time, Andrew was twelve, and his brother, Thomas, was five. Arriving into New York on August 14, 1848, aboard the Wiscasset from Glasgow, the Carnegies wasted little time settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where relatives already existed and were there to provide help. Allegheny City provided Carnegie's first job, as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, working for $1.20 a week. His father also worked there while his mother bound shoes at home, making a miniscule amount of money. Although the Carnegies lacked in money, they abounded in ideals and training for the ir children. At age 15, Carnegie became a telegraph messenger boy in Pittsburgh. He learned to send and decipher telegraphic messages and became a telegraph operator at the age of 17. Carnegie's next job was as a railroad clerk, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder, through his dedication and honest desire to succeed, to become train dispatcher and then division manager. At this time, young Carnegie, age 24, had already made some small investments that laid the foundations of his what would be tremendous fortune. One of these investments was the purchase of stock in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company. In 1864, Carnegie entered the iron business, but did not begin to make steel until years later. In 1873, he built the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to make Bessemer steel. He established many other steel plants, and in 1892, he merged all of his interests into the Carnegie Steel Company. This act from Carnegie is fitting with one of his most famous quotations, ?Put all of your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.? This firm became one of the greatest industrial enterprises in America. Carnegie later sold it to J.P. Morgan's United States Steel Corporation in 1901 for $400 million, which would be a little over $4 billion today! After retiring, Carnegie's fortune was estimated to be as large as half a billion dollars. From that time on, with the philosophy that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their money, he devoted himself to philanthropy. Although ironic, this man of great fortune strongly believed in the merits of poverty for the development of character and work ethic, and determined that wealthy men should not leave their fortunes to their children, but should give it away, claiming ?The man who dies thus rich, dies disgraced.? The picture of community service, Carnegie is quoted as saying, ?Pittsburgh entered the core of my heart when I was a boy, and cannot be torn out. I can never be one hair's breadth less loyal to her, or less anxious to help her in any way, than I have been since I could help anything. My treasure is still with you, and how best to serve Pittsburgh is the question which occurs to me almost every day of my life. Colonel James Anderson, who Carnegie believes to be his childhood benefactor, established a public library in his hometown of Allegheny City. This library was the first opportunity for Carnegie to take advantage of free information, and he developed a vast interest for knowledge, checking out at least one book a week, and developing himself as a young boy.
