However, there are many themes that conflict as well. King Lear and Hamlet are two works of literature that can be both compared and contrasted. Hamlet and Lear seem to be complete opposites on the surface. Hamlet is a young prince who is lost in a world of confusion and deception. His father is brutally murdered by his uncle and he then must face him as his new father-in-law when he marries his mother. Lear is an elderly man who is past his prime and is trying to raise his daughters in a world of vanity and live with the Renaissances preoccupation with appearances. As conflicting as these two characters seem they also have to deal with many of the same pressures and they surprisingly handle certain situations similarly. One such circumstance is that they are both forced the verge of madness. But this isnt the only thing that is coincidental between the two characters situation. They both have methods to their madness. Hamlet goes through many trials and tribulations throughout this play. He must live though his fathers untimely death, his uncles hasty marry to his mother, Ophelias refusal to see him or except his love letters, and the conspiracies that he sees planned against him. This alone is enough for any reader to understand why he has gone mad and to sympathize with. But Hamlet is stronger than he lets on to anybody. He is only pretending to be as mad as he is so that people will not become suspicious when he snoops around the house and acts irrationally toward his mother and step-father. His madness becomes the obsession of the house and King Claudius actually brings his old friends, Rosencranz and Guildenstern, to the house to find out what is causing him to loose his sanity. King Lear also was accused of going mad. He divided his kingdom into three parts so that each one of his daughters could share in his wealth. He had each daughter battle against each other to see who could flatter him the most. Goneril and Reagan both fought ruthlessly to attain the better division of land. When his youngest daughter (who was also his favorite) told him that she loved him like a daughter should love a father and that one day she would have a husband that she would also love, he became frenetic. He disowned her from the family, leaving the property to his other two daughters. Lear is shunned by his two daughters later on in the play, and is kicked out onto the streets where he becomes delirious. Although this display of daft behavior is more genuine than Hamlets, I believe that Lear ranted and raved because he was used to getting attention. Caroline got Scout in trouble for speaking up and hit her with a ruler for punishment. Scout blamed Walter for her getting in trouble so decided to beat him up during recess. When Atticus Finch got her in trouble for what she did, she soon realized that wasn’t the right thing to do. Another way maturity is shown in this novel is when Robert Ewell was angry about the way Atticus made him look on the stands, so on his way to the post office Bob Ewell spat in Atticus’ face. Bob told Atticus he would get him if it took him the rest of his life. When a man says he’s gonna get you, looks like he means it† (292). Bob was mad about the trial and that Atticus destroyed his last shred of credibility. The final way maturity is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird is when Jem Finch cut the tops off of Mrs. Dubose’s camellia bushes. Mrs. Dubose was the first adult to say that Atticus was no better than a black man because he is Tom Robinsons Lawyer. Mrs. Dubose says, â€Å"Jeremy Finch, I told you you’d live to regret tearing up my camellias. You regret it now, don’t you? † (146). Atticus punished Jem by making him go apologize to Mrs. Dubose. When he did she told him he had to read to her two hours a day for a month. Maturity was a huge part in moving on in life during these tough times. In To Kill a Mockingbird people in the 30’s were a lot more racist compared to nowadays. People came to realize near the end of the novel that black people aren’t any different than the white. The first way racism appears is when Aunt Alexandra wanted Calpurnia to leave because she was black and she didn’t think she was needed anymore now that she was there. Atticus stands up for Calpurnia and says, â€Å"Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have got along without her all these years†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (182). Calpurnia had to teach her kids how to read and write because education is segregated and there is no school for black people in Maycomb. Another way racism appears is when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, but really he was an innocent man. People assumed that just because Tom was a black man that he was guilty. Mayella Ewell says, â€Å"I don’t know how he done it, but he done it- I said it all happened so fast I -† (Harper249). Cecil Jacobs declared that Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers. Francis, Alexandra’s grandson tells Scout that Atticus is a nigger-lover. During the trial the African Americans had to sit separately from the whites, and it was an all-white jury. The have a large amount of evidence in favour of Tom Robinson proving that he is innocent, but they do not go through the evidence with an open mind due to the fact that he is black. The last way racism appears is how Dolphus Raymond is not accepted to either the blacks or whites communities because he has half-black, half-white children. He drinks from a bottle covered by a paper bag to give the impression to fellow white southerners that he is a drunk, a morally weak man who is too afraid to stand up for his beliefs. However, as Dill discovers when he takes a sip, Dolphus actually drinks Coca-Cola from the bag. Jem says, â€Å"How c’n you stand to get drunk ‘fore eight in the morning? † (211). His purpose for appearing to be a drunk is to excuse himself in the eyes of his white peers for being married to a black woman and fathering racially mixed children. Racism was a large part in the lives of the families in Maycomb. Loyalty was an important theme during and after the trial in this novel. The first way loyalty is displayed is how Atticus sticks by Tom Robinson’s side through the trial. A lot of people in Maycomb have grown to be much better people and show maturity, racism, and loyalty in To Kill a Mockingbird.

The son of a hand weaver, Carnegie received his only formal education during the short time between his birth and his move to the United States. When steam machinery for weaving came into use, Carnegie's father sold his looms and household goods, sailing to America with his wife and two sons. At this time, Andrew was twelve, and his brother, Thomas, was five. Arriving into New York on August 14, 1848, aboard the Wiscasset from Glasgow, the Carnegies wasted little time settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where relatives already existed and were there to provide help. Allegheny City provided Carnegie's first job, as a bobbin boy in a cotton factory, working for $1.20 a week. His father also worked there while his mother bound shoes at home, making a miniscule amount of money. Although the Carnegies lacked in money, they abounded in ideals and training for the ir children. At age 15, Carnegie became a telegraph messenger boy in Pittsburgh. He learned to send and decipher telegraphic messages and became a telegraph operator at the age of 17. Carnegie's next job was as a railroad clerk, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked his way up the ladder, through his dedication and honest desire to succeed, to become train dispatcher and then division manager. At this time, young Carnegie, age 24, had already made some small investments that laid the foundations of his what would be tremendous fortune. One of these investments was the purchase of stock in the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company. In 1864, Carnegie entered the iron business, but did not begin to make steel until years later. In 1873, he built the Edgar Thomson works in Braddock, Pennsylvania, to make Bessemer steel. He established many other steel plants, and in 1892, he merged all of his interests into the Carnegie Steel Company. This act from Carnegie is fitting with one of his most famous quotations, ?Put all of your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.? This firm became one of the greatest industrial enterprises in America. Carnegie later sold it to J.P. Morgan's United States Steel Corporation in 1901 for $400 million, which would be a little over $4 billion today! After retiring, Carnegie's fortune was estimated to be as large as half a billion dollars. From that time on, with the philosophy that the rich have a moral obligation to give away their money, he devoted himself to philanthropy. Waiters and waitresses are busy serving the customers. Outside the restaurant, the owner of the restaurant is seen arriving in a luxury car. After parking his car, he enters the restaurant and starts mingling with the customers. The humble man is none other than my beloved grandfather. My grandfather is a man of little education. He comes from a poor family. After attending primary school, he had to stop schooling due to poverty. As the eldest son of the family, he helped his father at his stall selling barbecued meats. Life was indeed difficult for him then. He had to get up early in the morning before dawn and go to the market together with his father to buy fresh chickens and ducks. Then, they returned home to slaughter them, prepare the meats and barbecue them. My grandfather was extremely interested in culinary skills. As a teenager, he was a fast learner and was able to prepare the meats as well as his father before long. One morning, my grandfather woke up early in the morning as usual. He assumed that everything would go on smoothly but little did he know that he had lost his father. When he went to wake his father up, there was no response from him. My grandfather panicked and called for an ambulance. When his father was sent to hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. My grandfather was totally devastated by the sudden demise of his father. In the midst of his sadness, he knew he had to find strength to carry on. To earn a living, he had no alternative but to take over the stall that his father left behind. Using the small savings that he inherited from his father, he continued with the business. He learnt about finance from his own experience and whatever he could recall when he was with his father. He led a frugal lifestyle and only spent money when it was necessary. He was so thrifty that when he got married a few years later, his guests were only treated to rice and barbecued meats. He was industrious and saved as much money as he could. He kept his savings in a bank. After a couple of years, his diligence and modesty finally paid off he had saved enough money to open a restaurant. Thanks to his excellent management skills that he acquired earlier, his restaurant prospered and his business expanded. Seven, The movie â€Å"Ernest Hemmingway once wrote, ‘the world is a fine place and worth fighting for,’ I agree with the second part.† The movie Seven ends with that quote stated by Somerset, attempting to justify the many moral dilemmas touched upon by the movie but mainly to bring the character of Somerset and the audience back to the beginning. The symmetry of the characters that the quote creates between the beginning of the movie and the end would have been lost if the director David Fincher would have gone with the original storyboard ending.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The beginning sequence does a great deal in showing the audience the personality of the two main characters. It fades in to Somerset’s apartment where we see a medium-long shot of Somerset over the sink. He is not yet ready for work. It cuts to a medium shot of him looking in a mirror, adjusting his tie and collar very meticulously and yet as if he has done this many a time before. The camera shoots the dresser top where Somerset’s personal items (keys, badge, pen, eyeglass case) are set, side-by-side, in order of their importance, in which he picks them up one by one. The camera cuts to the bed, neatly made, where his suit coat lies, precisely placed. He picks a piece of lint we cannot really see off of the coat before putting it on. Somerset has said nothing in this scene and yet we have already deciphered the type of person he is: a very neat, well-organized, meticulous person whose life seems to evolve around routine.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  With Somerset turning off his lamp, it fades into the darkness of the next scene, focusing on the large man lying face down on the floor dead. It cuts to a long shot of Somerset slowly walking away from the light, looking around the room and stopping to notice what was on the refrigerator. When Somerset asks the other cop if the child saw the crime, the cop rudely replies, What kind of fucking question is that? You know, we’re all gonna be real glad when we get rid of you, Somerset. You know that? It’s always these questions with you. ‘Did the kid see it?’ Who gives a fuck? He’s dead. His wife killed him. Anything else has nothing to do with us. This quote does two important things for the character of Somerset. First, it verifies our ideals of Somerset from the previous scene. His eye for detail entails us to conclude that he is a very skilled detective. Then when I become 9 years old, I decided to come with my grandparents (which is y mother's side) here in Bucolic.My parent's let me to come. So I continue my studies while my mother is visiting me monthly. Then 1 day, when I'm turning 10 years old, my mother together with my little sisters went here in Bucolic. And that's the thing; I never realize that they left my Daddy in Manila. And time's goes by, my daddy was visiting us, and my little sisters continue they're studies with me. When I turn 1st year high school, that's the time when my dad and mom never see each other again and Dad stop visiting us, but all I know is that my Dad is only busy with his job.And suddenly, I heard a gossip about my Daddy, that he's having an affair with his Boss that has been he's last Girlfriend back in their high school days. And then my mommy told me that they're already separated. And I know everythi ng about my father's undoing's. But aren’t genocides much more then that? Over the past hundred years, there have been several attempted genocides around the world. Two of the most well-known genocides are the Holocaust (the Nazi’s attempt to destroy the Jewish people) and the Bosnian genocide (the Serbians attempt to destroy the Bosnian population). This paper analyzes a political cartoon relating to genocides, describes the events that led to the Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide, describes several similarities and differences between them and explains why genocides continue regardless of the saying, â€Å"Never Again†. I. Cartoon Interpretation The cartoon is a commentary about the United Nations unsuccessful efforts to stop genocide.
