A Person Who Has Succeeded In Life Essay It is lunch hour. A large restaurant located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city is packed with regular customers. Waiters and waitresses are busy serving the customers. Outside the restaurant, the owner of the restaurant is seen arriving in a luxury car. After parking his car, he enters the restaurant and starts mingling with the customers. The humble man is none other than my beloved grandfather. My grandfather is a man of little education. He comes from a poor family. After attending primary school, he had to stop schooling due to poverty. As the eldest son of the family, he helped his father at his stall selling barbecued meats. Life was indeed difficult for him then. He had to get up early in the morning before dawn and go to the market together with his father to buy fresh chickens and ducks. Then, they returned home to slaughter them, prepare the meats and barbecue them. My grandfather was extremely interested in culinary skills. As a teenager, he was a fast learner and was able to prepare the meats as well as his father before long. One morning, my grandfather woke up early in the morning as usual. He assumed that everything would go on smoothly but little did he know that he had lost his father. When he went to wake his father up, there was no response from him. My grandfather panicked and called for an ambulance. When his father was sent to hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor. My grandfather was totally devastated by the sudden demise of his father. In the midst of his sadness, he knew he had to find strength to carry on. To earn a living, he had no alternative but to take over the stall that his father left behind. Using the small savings that he inherited from his father, he continued with the business. He learnt about finance from his own experience and whatever he could recall when he was with his father. He led a frugal lifestyle and only spent money when it was necessary. He was so thrifty that when he got married a few years later, his guests were only treated to rice and barbecued meats. He was industrious and saved as much money as he could. He kept his savings in a bank. After a couple of years, his diligence and modesty finally paid off he had saved enough money to open a restaurant. Thanks to his excellent management skills that he acquired earlier, his restaurant prospered and his business expanded. Apart from selling barbecued meats, he also sold other food such as chicken rice, economical meals, dim sum and a variety of noodles. Today, my grandfather is an extremely successful and well-established restaurateur. He often advises me to study hard and be a knowledgeable person in order to contribute to society in future. He also emphasises the virtues of diligence, frugality and honesty. I will not forget his advices for as long as I live because he is my role model.

Seven, The movie Essay -- Film Review Moie Essays

Seven, The movie â€Å"Ernest Hemmingway once wrote, ‘the world is a fine place and worth fighting for,’ I agree with the second part.† The movie Seven ends with that quote stated by Somerset, attempting to justify the many moral dilemmas touched upon by the movie but mainly to bring the character of Somerset and the audience back to the beginning. The symmetry of the characters that the quote creates between the beginning of the movie and the end would have been lost if the director David Fincher would have gone with the original storyboard ending.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The beginning sequence does a great deal in showing the audience the personality of the two main characters. It fades in to Somerset’s apartment where we see a medium-long shot of Somerset over the sink. He is not yet ready for work. It cuts to a medium shot of him looking in a mirror, adjusting his tie and collar very meticulously and yet as if he has done this many a time before. The camera shoots the dresser top where Somerset’s personal items (keys, badge, pen, eyeglass case) are set, side-by-side, in order of their importance, in which he picks them up one by one. The camera cuts to the bed, neatly made, where his suit coat lies, precisely placed. He picks a piece of lint we cannot really see off of the coat before putting it on. Somerset has said nothing in this scene and yet we have already deciphered the type of person he is: a very neat, well-organized, meticulous person whose life seems to evolve around routine.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  With Somerset turning off his lamp, it fades into the darkness of the next scene, focusing on the large man lying face down on the floor dead. It cuts to a long shot of Somerset slowly walking away from the light, looking around the room and stopping to notice what was on the refrigerator. When Somerset asks the other cop if the child saw the crime, the cop rudely replies, What kind of fucking question is that? You know, we’re all gonna be real glad when we get rid of you, Somerset. You know that? It’s always these questions with you. ‘Did the kid see it?’ Who gives a fuck? He’s dead. His wife killed him. Anything else has nothing to do with us. This quote does two important things for the character of Somerset. First, it verifies our ideals of Somerset from the previous scene. His eye for detail entails us to conclude that he is a very skilled detective. It also shows t... ...t coincide with the final ending, creating symmetry that the audience can readily grasp, unlike the storyboard ending. Looking Back at My Childhood

â€Å"Looking back on a childhood filled with events and memories, I find it rather difficult to pick on that leaves me with the fabled â€Å"warm and fuzzy feelings. † As a first daughter of a workaholic man, I actually felt the little sadness of being a child. When my father got home from his work, it was always late In the evening and when I wake- up early in the morning, his still sleeping until my School Bus comes. It always happened. But when he's on vacation, he never falls to surprise me with a bunch of new toys and sweets. He even takes my Mommy and me too Park, Malls, Zoo, etc.When my little sister's come Into our life, It gets happier. There are times when I together with my sister went to the school together and my dad and mom would fetch us and went to the Ocean Adventure. There were lots of beautiful places that my family goes when vacation. I thought that our family Is perfect, and suddenly my childhood Is nearly my miserable nightmare, because when I was 6-8 years old, I saw everything that happens when my Mom and Dad were fighting and I don't know why. Then when I become 9 years old, I decided to come with my grandparents (which is y mother's side) here in Bucolic.My parent's let me to come. So I continue my studies while my mother is visiting me monthly. Then 1 day, when I'm turning 10 years old, my mother together with my little sisters went here in Bucolic. And that's the thing; I never realize that they left my Daddy in Manila. And time's goes by, my daddy was visiting us, and my little sisters continue they're studies with me. When I turn 1st year high school, that's the time when my dad and mom never see each other again and Dad stop visiting us, but all I know is that my Dad is only busy with his job.And suddenly, I heard a gossip about my Daddy, that he's having an affair with his Boss that has been he's last Girlfriend back in their high school days. And then my mommy told me that they're already separated. And I know everythi ng about my father's undoing's. That when I was still in my mother's womb, Dad is already having different affairs, for short my dad is a simple playboy. And when I already know everything, I changed. I changed a lot that Eve become hard headed, selfish, etc. I even have my very first failing grades. But times went by, everything is perfect again.I learn how to be responsible, appreciate little things, and to accept the fact that nothings perfect In life. The Holocaust And The Bosnian Genocide - 1310 Words

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word â€Å"genocide† as â€Å"the killing of people who belong to a particular racial, political, or cultural group† (Merriam). But aren’t genocides much more then that? Over the past hundred years, there have been several attempted genocides around the world. Two of the most well-known genocides are the Holocaust (the Nazi’s attempt to destroy the Jewish people) and the Bosnian genocide (the Serbians attempt to destroy the Bosnian population). This paper analyzes a political cartoon relating to genocides, describes the events that led to the Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide, describes several similarities and differences between them and explains why genocides continue regardless of the saying, â€Å"Never Again†. I. Cartoon Interpretation The cartoon is a commentary about the United Nations unsuccessful efforts to stop genocide. These efforts began in the 1940s: â€Å"Nearly 60 years ago, the international community made a commitment to put an end to the crime of genocide by ratifying the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.†(Hastings) As noted in the cartoon, however, the United Nations efforts have not succeeded. After reading chapter 4 of ‘Frankenstein’ I have noticed that Mary’s use of language is that of someone (this someone being Dr. Frankenstein) telling someone else there story, discussing what has happened to this person in chronological order and describing what has happened to his life. Mary Shelley uses a good sentence structure, this being a flowing type, meaning that she uses many commas instead of full stops, making the sentences last longer making short and snappy phrases and making you keep reading just to get to the end of the sentence. Other literary devices that Mary Shelley uses to make a good horror effect are things like metaphors and similes making you read more into the text, to get a clear understanding of the novel, for example; ‘Darkness had no effect upon my fancy; and a churchyard was to me merely the receptacle of bodies deprived of life, which, from being the seat of beauty and strength, had become food for the worm’. Pip has learnt an important lesson in this novel and the author has made him to learn it by exploring the idea of conscience, self-improvement and ambition. It became the central theme and topic of the novel. It was Pips ethics and morale, which has created a channel for self-improvement. From the core of the heart, Pip was an idealist. He has Great Expectations from his life and future. The great expectations of the protagonist acted in three levels, social, moral and educational. However, at the end of the novel, through the examples of Biddy, Joe and Magwitch, Pip has learnt that educational and social improvement are basically peripheral to understand the real worth of oneself. He has learnt the worth of conscience, love and affection that should be positioned higher than the social belongings and formal education management. Abstract of Macbeth The great literary maestro William Shakespeare has explored the ambitious nature of the protagonist Macbeth and its destructive forces that could ruin lives around him in the tragic drama called Macbeth. The destruction of the ambition was started when it was out of the moral order. The ambition and greed of the Macbeth has leaded him to commit unjust deeds. In the play of William Shakespeares Macbeth, which possibly written in 1606, has portrayed the way in which the greed and destructive passion grew in the mind of the hero, which led him to kill King Duncan. The protagonist Macbeth was the representation of his time, that is Renaissance. It was a story of king and queen and gods or any supernatural power did not operate their actions occurred in their life. Macbeths life was decided by his own actions. There might be some influencing factors related to Macbeths act, like prophecies of three witches or Lady Macbeths persuasion to commit the murder. However, it was Macbeths ambition and greed for power, which would make him as a tragic hero. Killing Duncan was solely Macbeths action for fulfilling his own aspiration and longing to be the king of the Scotland. Macbeth has the characteristics of Hubris. His great ambition is the reflection of excessive pride. Macbeth is also affected with the imagination of the future king of Scotland. His characteristics flaw or hubris is excessive ambition. In the first act of the play, he was shown as brave and faithful warrior. When he had communicated with three witches, the reader realized that his physical valor and sweet nature had mixed up with profound ambition of becoming king and self-doubt about his deed. The prediction of the witches actually made him happy but it created an inner turmoil. In other word, the prediction had cast light on the intricate side of his ambitious nature and influenced him greatly to kill Duncan. The maestro William Shakespeare had shown Macbeth as the terrible reflection of ambition, which one had, lacked the strength of personality. Macbeth is responsible for his own deeds and ruins. Macbeth has great ambition to gain power, but their struggle for acquiring power somehow made them corrupted, which is the main cause of their fall. In the play Macbeth, the protagonist has reversed the human nature, led by the super ambition. When the Renaissance humanism focused on the human being as the image of the God and accepted the divine hierarchy of the universe where each being has its own fixed place, the reversal of nature catered to break the chain management. Therefore, the whole order of the universe is interrupted in the play, which is written in the time of the Renaissance itself. The writer has shown in his play, that the ambition in any form, be it for power in case of Macbeth, has led him to the exploitation of the human virtues and qualities. In a way his ambition became vaulting, he went through a series of occurrences where he was the controller of the happenings but he did these beastly, contradicting the basic human characteristics. The Macbeth lost his humanity by killing Duncan who would consider Macbeth as his son. Therefore, Macbeths sin was to kill her father for the throne. His greed for power led him to break the morality of the universe where he only considered achieving the superior posit ion. In case of Macbeth, he seemed to know that it was his ambitious nature, which controlled his action. In the act one he had said it, he realized it that the ambition within himself is vaulting. In act one, scene seven of the drama, it is written I have no spur /To prick the sides of my intent, but only /Vaulting ambition (Shakespeare, 2014). Even, in the act one scene three when he was planning to murder king Duncan, he was fighting with the wicked side within him. Actually, Macbeths sense of super ambition hided the moral conscience of him and led him to make a murderous plot of how to be the king of Scotland. As long as Macbeth heard prophesies of the witches that he would made thane of Cawdor and eventually the future king of Scotland, a stream of ambition conquered him and he was tempted planning to murder the present king of Scotland, King Duncan. His ambition could not leave him to commit one murder; however, he committed the sin of consecutive murder for securing his throne. He killed chamberlains, Banquo, Lady Macduff and their children. His action of murder for fulfilling his ambition affected him with a feeling of guilt, which constantly followed him. He started hallucinating; he saw the ghost of Banquo and heard voices of unconscious as he murdered the sleeping Duncan. Even, he has hallucinated the bloodshed dagger by which he had killed Duncan. The handle of the dagger pointed towards him and he was scared for this. Hearing the prophecies and before the murder of Duncan, Macbeth was quite uncertain about his action. However, Lady Macbeths desire for kingship persuaded Macbeth to kill Duncan. Eventually, after the killing, Lady Macbeth started hallucinating of blood in her hand and she was started sleepwalking. At the end of the play, Macbeth had to fight with his enemy, his fighting continued until Macduff beheaded him. The play was ended after completing a full circle. The plays circle was started with the winning of battlefield by Macbeth and ended with the defeat of Macbeth in combat. In the middle of the circle in the play, it became tragical due to Macbeths greed for power and ambition. He had to die for whatever and how he wished. In A Passage to India, E. M Forster has explored the difficulty of the friendly relationship between the ruler and the ruled, the colonizer and the colonized. In another words, the novel has explored the difficulty in establishing a relationship between English and Indian. A Passage to India has been started and ended by stating an important question, which is the possibility for an Indian and Englishman to ever be friends, situating the friendly relationship within the context of British colonialism. Forster has manipulated this question as the basic framework of the novel for exploring the British political control of India associating it in level that is more personal. The power relation of the colonizer and the colonized exists even in the friendship between two individuals who could not free their identity from the ruler and the ruled. The author has shown it through the friendship between Doctor Aziz and Cyril Fielding. In the first half of the novel, Aziz is dismissive of the English, especially towards Doctor Aziz, desiring only to contemplate them comically and started to ignore them totally. However, Aziz started to feel the intuitive connection with Mrs. Moore when they were in the mosque and this incident has provided him the scope and possibility to build friendship with Fielding. In the first half of the novel, the relationship and friendship between Fielding and Aziz has represented the most positive model of liberal humanism. In this friendship, there is no essence of the power relationship of the colonizer and the colonized. In this section, Forster has suggested that the rule of the British in India could be respectful and successful if only the English and the Indians treat each other as Aziz and Fielding has treated each other. In their relationship, no power structure was there. They treat each othe r as the worthy individuals and respect each other as equal human being. They both have connected through good will, intelligence and frankness. However, in the second half of the novel and in the climax of the novel the friendship between these two individuals has broken down. It has started with Adelas accusation who was also a British woman. The accusation was that Aziz wanted or attempted to assault Adela in the Marabar caves. Later with the claim of Adela that Aziz wanted to rape her while, she was in the cave. The friendship between the Aziz and Fielding has fallen apart due to anger of the Aziz. Aziz was astonished that Fielding has befriended with Adela after nearly ruining the life of the Aziz by false accusation. The thrust of both of the individuals friendship were external in the form, as both Fielding and Aziz have suffered from their tendencies of the respective cultures. Aziz has tendency to flow his imagination and to let his suspicion become harden into the grudge. Fielding has permitted from an English rationalism and literalism that has bound him to Azizs true feelings. It has made Fielding too stilted to reach out to Aziz by the means of the conversations or letters. In addition to that, their respective English and Indian communities disoriented them apart by the means of their mutual stereotyping. At the end of the novel, the reader can perceive that even the Indian landscape has started to dominate their friendship. The final visualization of the Indian and English friendship by the Froster was the pessimistic in nature. The friendship could be possible after the end of the British colony as historical perspective became suddenly prominent in the friendship.
