Effects of the Industrial Revolution on England The Industrial Revolution in England brought significant changes to the country both positive and negative. The Industrial Revolution was generally positive because of the development of technology and a better standard of living. However, some of the negative aspects were the terrible labor conditions and the mistreatment of women and children. Industrial Revolution in England started in the 1760s and went on until around 1850. Life before then was much more hard for the working class. The average workingman in 1755 made an average of 56.96 pounds per year, not including taxes, rent, and other needs. Women and children were paid significantly less. England’s population was at about 6.5 million people and approximately .9 percent of the world’s total population. With its slow growing population less than 10 percent of England’s citizens lived in cities, which was not enough to employ the factories that were just starting due to the rise of demand for goo ds countrywide. Pre-Industrial life was agriculture based and used a system known as the cottage industry. The cottage industry was an industry system in which farm families would be paid and provided the raw materials to turn them into a finished product. A traveling merchant would later pay for and collect the finished goods and then sell them at the market for a profit.
